These films are designed for a narrow range of audiences, often raise social aspects of acute and profound questions inward man. Their second name – copyright movies. The current definition makes Variety magazine in its Slanguage Dictionary: «Art House – a non-English and non-mainstream independent cinema, which is specialized in cinema». Art-house films are generally not considered to be a counterweight to commercial and popular culture of Hollywood. Therefore, shoot them in small studios and a small budget. However, despite not being quite high popularity ratings, it is called an intelligent cinema, and its audience, respectively – the intellectuals.
For many people who are superficially familiar with films of this genre, art-house seems to be something very boring, monotonous, slow. But in reality it is not so. Just looking art-house, the audience needs to understand that this movie is based on a rare drive and dive into action to which we are accustomed Hollywood. Do not expect sophisticated special effects, heroic feats or happy ending. Instead – stunning to the core storyline, innovative ways to capture and superrealistic game actors. If you like to dig into yourself, analyze, think, then art-house to your taste.
An excursion into history
The very notion of «art-house» («House of Art») dates back to the 1940′s of the XX century in the USA. Then the art-house call no specific genre cinema and theaters that showed the pre-war classic Hollywood films or foreign films (not the U.S.) and local independent production. More than ten years later in Paris established the International Confederation of art-house cinemas CICAE. This was an important step for the development of this «strange», according to many movies. The first, which paved the way for a new genre became directors low genres. At one time they were known movies about freaks sinners disabled. Art-house films and Ukraine
Not to say that fans of art-house lot in Ukraine, but is especially among young people, those who love and understand the genre. This is evidenced by the popularity of film festivals, which have become mandatory presentation often short of intellectual cinema. This Odessa International Film Festival, and «French Spring in Ukraine» and «Youth».
In Ukraine there is even film distributors «Art-house Traffic». He first started in Ukraine art-house film distribution – movies, risky in commercial terms, but non-standard and high artistic level. «Art-house Traffic» was founded in late 2003 in Kiev, by Denys Ivanov. Today, film distributors cooperates with more than 50 cinemas in all major cities of Ukraine, creating art-house system, the so-called «limited» box office.
Work teams «Art-house Traffic» experts repeatedly noted the domestic film industry. They are the prize «for the development of non-commercial cinema» («Kinoekspo-2006»), the prize «Best film distributors» («Choice Posters-2005»), once three special prize «25 frames» Ukraine Film Festival 2007: for best trailer best poster and the best slogan (film «Tunnel»).
Ukrainian director Vasyl Rybalchenko said that for him art-house and what can be compared to this genre of cinema.
«For the intellectual elite art-house cinema – it is something without which they can not imagine themselves. It is a symbol of dissent and a testing ground for new ideas. And in Ukraine and in the world, only 10-20% of the audience are enthusiasts of this genre. Mostly these people are artists. They draw inspiration in fresh ways, looking for interesting artistic techniques to create your own creative product.
Personally, I love art-house. But this is not the movie that I want to watch with friends. I like to be face to face with such films. It is interesting then to compare their experiences and opinions on a particular art-house tape of experiences and opinions of those who also managed to see it. Often everyone understands something, do not like each other. Apparently, this zest and Art House.
The fact that in the twentieth century removed as art-house, that while not all and not fully understood today all know and admire. The more you watch art-house, the less you will capture Hollywood movies designed for mass audience. Independent film – a kind of drug that causes a kind of addiction. Tried once, well, «feel a taste» stop it will be difficult.
